From Sponsorship to StoryCloud: Why My Lived Experience Drives Our Mission
Monisha Sami
From a young age, I was aware of children who did not have the same opportunities I did.
When I was five or six, I remember seeing the World Vision advertisements on television that showed sponsored children, and asking my mum if we could help. She said “of course, yes,” and I never understood why she seemed so happy about it.
A few years later, when I was almost nine, I finally understood.
My mum’s story was shared in a Compassion Australia magazine. It was the first time any of us learned that she herself had once been a sponsored child. The support she received during her childhood had helped her finish school.

She then moved to Australia to build a new life for herself. Mum dreamed of becoming a lawyer, but life took her on a different path, and she built a career in finance.
My dad, who had not completed his own schooling, came to Australia on his own at twenty-four. A few years later, my mum arrived at seventeen. They met here, two young people working hard to build a life out of very little.
I was their only child for the first eight years of my life. My parents had always been working when I was younger. Even in early primary school they had odd hours, which made it hard for them to be at school events, or even at pickup and drop-off. I pretended it did not bother me, but it did.
Much of my time was spent in day care, with babysitters, or on my own. In those quiet hours I found books. Stories became my refuge and sparked a deep curiosity.
My parents encouraged this interest, often finding small ways to feed my love of reading, even when money and time were tight.
Over time, I came to understand just how much my parents sacrificed to give me what they could. Growing up as a South Asian child in the 1990s also meant facing challenges that were not always visible.
What carried me through was a love of learning. I was drawn to English and Science, fascinated by how things worked, and captivated by books about planets, astronomy, and dinosaurs.
That curiosity became my pathway forward. It opened doors to learning and gave me hope for what might be possible.
I also knew that many children in similar circumstances were not given the same chance to explore their interests, or to see where their curiosity might take them.
Books were my portal to imagination and learning.
In the digital age, that portal looks very different. This is what drives me today. Inequity begins very early, often before a child even realises it. During those long hours when parents are working and away from home, children do not always understand why.
Today, so much of a child’s learning and exploration happens in digital spaces. If those spaces are out of reach, children can be left behind before they have even had the chance to start. Parents who are already stretched need support to bridge that gap, no matter how much they care.
StoryCloud’s Learning Bundles are our way of changing that.
We are focused on giving children the best start possible, reducing inequity in learning, and easing the barriers that prevent families from accessing the tools their children deserve. By combining engaging stories with safe digital infrastructure, we are creating a learning foundation that nurtures curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning from the very beginning.
When I think about my mum’s story, I see how it connects directly into what I am building today. Her opportunity gave her stability, one that influenced the lives of me and my sisters. My curiosity gave me direction.
StoryCloud is how I hope to bring that full circle, so no child feels left behind, no parent feels unsupported, and every family, no matter their circumstances, can believe in a brighter start.
At its heart, it is about giving every child the chance to follow their curiosity, just as I once did.
